Communicating about diversity and inclusion so that organizational members are inspired and engaged is challenging. The goal of this chapter is to make communicating inclusion efforts more powerful by selectively drawing on the current knowledge base. First, it briefly addresses why fact-based communication is not adequate to persuade audiences to pursue inclusion. Then, the chapter describes support for designing communication about this topic based on individual stages of development. Next, it addresses techniques that reduce bias and prejudice. Communication approaches and content for advancing inclusion at different organizational stages of development are also discussed. Finally, the chapter provides examples, information, and resources regarding how to communicate in ways that are oriented to facts, feelings, and behavior. Information on social justice, fairness, spirituality, similarities among people, and values and principles is included. As we competently apply this knowledge to our communication about inclusion, organizational outcomes will improve.
