Does the arrangement of personal and family archives present specific characteristics, which would distinguish it from the arrangement of public archives and other kinds of private archives? Can we still apply to them the traditional principles of the respect des fonds and of the respect for the original order, when the changes in public archives force archivists to create new solutions to face them? If yes, which consequences will derive? In which private archives policy should the arrangement operations be inserted in order to be more efficent? Do the challenges that private archives put today to the archivist allow to replace these operations in a coherent global perspective? This paper tries to answer these questions, recalling at the same time the main kinds of personal and family archives.
