Personality scales of impulsiveness have been associated with discounting behavior. It has also been shown that nicotine has an effect on the performance of various tasks measuring impulsivity. This study has two main objectives: (1) to determine the relationship between the impulsive personality and the degrees to which delayed and uncertain monetary gains and losses are discounted, and (2) to examine whether the relationship between the impulsive personality and the four types of discounting differ between smokers and never smokers. 31 current smokers and 32 never smokers participated in this experiment. They were required to choose between immediate and delayed monetary gains (and losses), or between guaranteed and probabilistic rewards (or losses). Following completion of this task, they completed two personality questionnaires - Barratte's Impulsiveness Scale (BIS) and the Sensation Seeking Scale (SSS). Several BIS and SSS subscales were positively correlated with the degrees of discounting for delayed monetary gains and losses, but negatively correlated with uncertain monetary gains. Moreover, when dividing participants by smoking status, we found differences between smokers and never smokers in the correlation pattern between impulsive personality and the four types of discounting. Neuro-psychological bases of impulsive behavior, such as discounting behavior, may differ between smokers and never smokers.
