This chapter first describes the most relevant features of the German pension system and the reforms since the 1970s, and then discusses long-term trends in mortality, primary diagnoses for disability insurance benefit recipients, and subjective health measures, together with long-term trends in labor force participation. It analyzes how selected pension system reforms, in particular the introduction of or changes in the generosity of various early retirement options, have affected retirement behavior in Germany. Next, the chapter considers early retirement behavior by birth cohorts and shows that cohorts born during World War I have retired earlier than those born before or after the war.
