This work proposes a theoretical foundation for Geographical Information Science. Taking the concepts of geographical space developed by Geography in the 20th Century as a basis, the authors analyze how these concepts can be captured in computational representations and thus indicate the limitations of the current generation of geographical information technology. We believe that the different concepts of geographical space can be a fundamental starting point to establish the epistemological foundations of Geographical Information Science and to the conception of a new generation of GIS technology. Key words: geographical information, geographical space, GIS.
