Abstract

A collection of music journalism from the past three centuries. The apercus of writers such as Heine, Shaw and Hanslick are set beside those of composers such as Debussy, Tchaikovsky and Janacek, and figures of high seriousness and austerity consort with the advocates of pleasure in music.
