Russian academic geography of the 20th century is characterized by long-standing traditions. In particular, they are associated with the establishment and development of research at the Academy’s Institute of Geography, which celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2008. The evolution of ideas and concepts of modern geography and its relations with practice are traced by the authors of this article. Attention is drawn to the cyclic character of discussions devoted to the integrity of geography, the mutual complementarity of its physical and socioeconomic branches, the depth of integration and differentiation, and the independent nature of individual geographic sciences.
