A study to evaluate first-time end user reactions to online database searching was conducted on the menu-driven BRS/After Dark. Attention was focused on the problems encountered and their implications for instruction. Twenty searches were conducted by students and faculty at University of Wisconsin-Stout. Background informa tion on participants and their reactions to the search was gathered through questionnaires. Search statements were also analyzed. Although search problems were encoun tered, end users responded enthusiastically to database searching. Recommendations for instruction and the role of the intermediary in end user searching are given.
