SMART GROWTH AND TRANSPORTATION: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FOR AUSTIN

Abstract

Smart growth is a recent nationwide movement that seeks to address problems of urban and suburban growth. The city of Austin, Texas, has developed a local plan to manage growth know as the Smart Growth Initiative. The initiative consists of a number of programs designed to focus and direct growth, enhance existing neighborhoods in the urban core, and preserve environmentally sensitive areas. Establishing new development patterns and implementing transportation improvements that maximize opportunities for multimodal transportation are critical aspects of the Smart Growth Initiative and significant challenges for Austin.
