Linguistic Variation and Morphology Linguistic and Sociocultural Studies Gender Studies in Language

Abstract

This chapter provides a historical overview of the ways in which gender has been handled as an independent variable in the analysis of language variation and change. The developments in the field are placed within a larger intellectual context, including connections with social theory and the relationship between quantitative and qualitative methods. The proposed distinction between three waves of variationist study is explored.
