The chapter addresses the issue of how to develop students' 'reference skill' so that they can make best use of reference books such as dictionaries when writing in a foreign language. The problem is that expertise of reference book construction is not always matched by student writers' expertise in their exploitation. Lengthy interruptions to the creative flow, and to the learning process, might well be reduced by improved technological supports, and in the process of using these, students' abilities to formulate searching questions would be improved.
