This article is a historical overview of services provided (or not provided) to organized labor by public libraries. Be ginning in the 1920s the needs of labor as a special group were recognized by a few librarians. The movement gained momentum during the next four decades, acceler ating after World War II. Special emphasis is placed on the contributions made by the AFL-CIO/ALA (RASD) Joint Committee on Library Service to Labor Groups since the 1940s. Observations are made on the direction these spe cial services are presently taking.
