One of the central concerns of current syntactic research is the characterization of the mapping relating lexical meaning and syntactic form. An important facet of this comprehensive issue is the syntactic status of ‘understood’ or ‘implicit’ arguments: does an ‘understood’ thematic role, inherent in the lexical meaning of a verb, always correspond to a structural slot in syntactic representations? If not, under what conditions can the mismatch between meaning and form be tolerated? The concrete case that this article addresses is illustrated by the following pairs in English and Italian: (1)a This leads (people) to the following conclusion. b Questo conduce (la gente) alla seguente conclusione.
