This introduction presents an overview of key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book begins with a brief history of modern economic growth. The differential progress of the nations of the world in generating economic growth and reducing poverty are examined. The noted economic historian Angus Deaton opened in author book, The Great Escape: Health, Wealth, and the Origins of Inequality with Inequality is often a consequence of progress. The sources of economic growth are then identified using an aggregate production function. The importance of economic growth for reducing extreme poverty was highlighted and related to income distribution. The determinants of national output growth were discussed. Statistics on economic growth for the nations of the world grouped by per capita incomes and geographical regions were presented not only to illustrate the concepts, but also to portray the diversity in experience.
