Abstract The Rotter Incomplete Sentences Blank (RISB) is the most frequently used sentence completion test of personality and socioemotional functioning. A performance‐based test, the RISB is used to screen for adjustment problems, to facilitate case conceptualization and diagnosis, and to monitor treatment. The RISB can be interpreted quantitatively using a semi‐objective scoring system or qualitatively to identify areas of psychosocial conflict among respondents. When scored quantitatively, interscorer reliability, temporal stability, and internal consistency are adequate. Validity is supported by correlations with other measures of psychological distress, peer and clinician ratings of functioning, and differences in RISB scores for clinic‐referred and nonreferred individuals. Recent research suggests the RISB may be used with adolescents and adults. Data supporting the qualitative interpretation of RISB responses are limited. However, responses may be useful to complement other, objective components of psychological assessment and to obtain a description of clients' concerns in their own words.
