The development of complex sentences has attracted much interest in recent studies of child language acquisition (Karmiloff-Smith, 1979). Much of this interest stems from syntactic as well as semantic considerations that continue to make complex sentences problematic well into middle childhood. The purpose of this study is to offer cross-cultural data, collected from Spanish-speaking children, for complex sentences that require mood choices. It is also hoped that the results can be used to formulate a better idea of how Hispanic children acquire the intricate linguistic contrasts that are part of the Spanish modal system.
