Dinamiche linguistiche in contesto migratorio: i discendenti di emigrati calabresi negli Stati Uniti

Abstract

L’obiettivo teorico dell’articolo è indagare le dinamiche di perdita e mantenimento della lingua in contesto migratorio italofono, individuando i fenomeni linguistici legati alla progressiva erosione della L1 in favore della L2 e stabilendo quanto influisca su questo processo la specificità del contesto migratorio. Si mostrerà come la volontà di trasmettere o meno la propria lingua ai discendenti sia solo un elemento nel quadro del mantenimento delle lingue in contesto migratorio, elemento da contestualizzare all’interno di fattori macrosociali e microsociali e di processi di progressiva semplificazione della L1 paralleli alla complessificazione della L2. L’esito ultimo di questi processi è la creazione di un sistema linguistico che non coincide perfettamente né con la L1 né con la L2, le cui caratteristiche sembrano governate da alcuni criteri, in parte enucleati nelle ricerche di settore, in parte da verificare con future analisi quantitative e qualitative. I dati sui quali si basa l’analisi sono tratti da un corpus di emigrati calabresi residenti all’estero raccolto tra il 31 agosto 2010 e il 24 agosto 2011. Linguistic dynamics in migrant backgrounds: the descendants of immigrants from Calabria in the United States The theoretical goal of this article is to investigate the dynamics of loss and maintenance of language in Italian-speaking migrants, identifying the linguistic phenomena are lated to the gradual erosion of L1 in favor of L2 in order to establish how large a role the specificity of the context of migration plays in this process. We will show how the desire, or lack of it, to pass on their language to their descendants is only one element in the maintenance of the language in the context of migration. This factor is contextualized in microsocial and macrosocial spheres and in processes of the progressive simplification of L1 simultaneous to the growing complexity of the L2. The final result of these processes is the creation of a language system that does not coincide perfectly with either the L1 or the L2. Their characteristics appear to be governed by some criteria, partially enucleated in research, partly to be verified in future quantitative and qualitative analyses. The data on which this analysis is based is drawn from a corpus of Calabrian emigrants living abroad, collected between 31 August 2010 and 24 August 2011.
