Abstract This chapter examines women’s relationship to political parties and how they gained access to representative institutions in South Africa and Uganda. It is shown that women in South Africa were ready at the right moment to make an impact, and were able to introduce notions of women’s rights to participation on the grounds of their equal citizenship. In Uganda, women were pre-empted by a powerful political association that obtained significant electoral mileage from stressing women’s difference as a group.
