Measurement properties of the Index of Spouse Abuse (ISA) have not been established within a Spanish-speaking context. Therefore, the present study aims to examine some psychometric properties of the ISA in a Salvadorian female sample. Participants (N = 300) ranged in age from 18 to 57 years; they completed the ISA, the Hurlbert Index of Sexual Assertiveness, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Results of principal component analysis revealed a two-factor structure (Non-physical abuse and Physical abuse) accounted for 62.87% of the total variance. Eight items had to be dropped because they were inconsistent with the original structure of the ISA, resulting high internal consistency alpha coefficients on both factors (.95 and .88, respectively). These findings are discussed in relation to previous research efforts. On the other hand, correlations between abuse subscales, sexual assertiveness and self-esteem were congruent with prior research, supporting the validity of the Spanish version of the ISA.
