FW de Klerk's 1990 announcement of reform has initiated a significant process of policy formulation and debate in SA. In both language and media fields, proposals for policy have been made. Considering the close inter-relationship between language and the media, it is somewhat strange that both the language policy and media policy debates have, up to now, developed almost autonomously. Given that the outcome of the language policy debate will have significant impact on the functioning of the SA media, it is perhaps especially surprising how little attention both media academics and those working in the media have paid to this debate. This article will examine both debates, as well as the implications different media and language policies will have for one another.
