This paper proceeds as follows. In Section I the interrelationship between labor force participation and the Social Security disability program is discussed. Then in Section II a model of labor force participation is estimated using data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of older males. This allows an examination of racial differences in the determinants of labor force participation. Finally in Section III the cross-sectional model is put to the difficult test of predicting labor force participation of prime age males by race over the period 1958-76. (excerpt)
