The annual Hiroshima lantern-floating ritual has brought together world community members who share concern for the proliferation of nuclear weapons. One particular lantern-floating ritual is described with a focus on the lantern as a symbol of the ritual and with a description of the creative process involved in designing the lanterns. The need for such rituals is discussed with recognition of similar rituals that have brought together community members with like concerns. The art therapist can encourage participants to use the creative process within rituals, enabling them to find a voice using imagery and symbols. An opportunity exists to broaden the role of the art therapist to participate creatively with other community leaders in addressing social concerns and building community through the process of ritual.
