While it has been commonly understood in the Western world today that only two scholarly traditions of communication research – the European tradition and the North American tradition – are recognized in the global field of communication studies, this chapter presents an informed argument for the view that a Chinese paradigm of communication research has already emerged. The chapter first gives a synthesis of current scholarship on Chinese journalism and communication and scholarly debates. Then it presents a meta-theoretical evaluation of the literature. Finally, the chapter provides suggestions for the future development of the Chinese paradigm in journalism and communication theory and research. For the creation of a communicative China and a more harmonious global village, China should strive to become one of the major sources of communication theory and research in the world.
