Abstract This article deals with sampling and inspection policies, which are located in the frontier area between process control and lot acceptance sampling. These methods show that from the beginning of statistical quality control the need was felt to consider lot acceptance not as an isolated problem, but in connection with the corresponding lot generating process. However, the methods described here are heuristic ones and do not allow reliable statements about their performance under realistic conditions. Therefore, future research in lot acceptance should focus on modeling the relation between lot quality and process quality for allowing the development of reliable and efficient procedures.
