Abstract

Historical forms of sociology were well established in Germany but not in the United States before 1933. Many German historical sociologists went into exile in the United States after 1933, but their historical orientation had little immediate resonance there. Historical sociology became an entrenched disciplinary subfield in the US after the 1970s but it never reemerged in postwar Germany.
