AbstractThis article focuses on the testimonial narrative work of Daisy Rubiera Castillo. It shows how these distinctly feminist texts have contributed to the creation of the Afro-Cuban woman as a narrative subject, and its inclusion into the Cuban literary canon since the 1990s. After presenting the complex relationship between feminism and testimonio literature in Cuba, a closer look at three testimonio novels edited by Daisy Rubiera —Reyita, sencillamente (1997), Golpeando la memoria (2005) and Desafío al silencio (2010)— will show how these texts created and established a well-rooted and supportive narrative voice for Afro-Cuban women. When studied as a unit, Daisy Rubiera’s writings act as part of a larger feminist struggle for the visibility, self-representation and collective consciousness of women of African descent throughout the Caribbean and Latin America.
