The infl uence of Anglophone critical urban geography has grown considerably during the 1990s. This research program has emerged in the 1980s out of radical geography. This last fi eld was particularly focused on analyzing the urbanization of capital since the late1960s. The theoretical framework of critical urban geography has then moved away from Marxian political economy to recognize the multiple forms of oppression based on gender, race, sexual orientation… Considering this theoretical shift, this article is an attempt to characterize the specifi c contributions of critical urban geography to urban theory. Theorizations of space have become inevitable, but many geographers insist to propose a non-essentialist conception of urban space. The article also summarizes how these issues were discussed at the International Conference of Critical Geography held in Frankfurt in August 2011.
