Both economics and psychology are rich with theories and methods relating to the purchasing behavior of the consumer. Studies of tourism decision modeling mirror more general applications of choice and decision modeling, focusing on discrete choices made from a known and fixed set of alternatives. This approach works best for highly structured, routine decision situations. Many common assumptions employed in decision modeling are violated in more complex, long-range choices, which are common in tourism. Based on a review of decision making research and a study of the seasonal home location decision using verbal protocol methods, a dynamic model of complex choice is proposed.
