The adjustment of children to parental separation and divorce is studied in light of demographic factors. Overall adjustment of children was measured by a behavior checklist completed by parents. The profiles of maladjusted children were examined in relation to the demographic data. It was found that all maladjusted children in this sample came from families who reported a 50% drop in income immediately following parental separation. Also, all maladjustedchildren were between agessix and nine at separation from one parent. The implications of these factors and their interaction are discussed.
