This chapter provides an introduction to the history of psychological objects. It points out that the field is not as popular as it ought to be because of the prevalence of naïve naturalism. This is the view that the objects of contemporary English-language psychology reflect the nature of the external world. Some problems with this view are discussed using examples from anthropological and historical research. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the implications of this work for theoretical and philosophical psychology.
