The SURGE (The SUrvey Reporting GuidelinE) is primarily intended to provide guidance to authors reporting information that has been collected via self-administered, postal surveys. This chapter discusses three phases of the foundation work to develop reporting guideline for survey research. It explains systematic review of the literature designed to identify any existing guidelines or quality criteria relevant to the reporting of survey research, and any research evaluating the quality of reporting for survey research; results from this phase indicated that while criteria have been identified to inform the reporting of survey research, no validated reporting guidelines exist. Second, results from this review informed the development and pilot-testing of a 33-item assessment tool designed to identify the most important criteria to be reported. Finally, the chapter discusses the application of this tool to a representative sample of published papers reporting the results of surveys from the health and health services literature.
