Over the last four decades, more than three hundred sound recordings have been produced of Buddhist musics from around the world, and in the last two decades, such recordings have been appearing with increasing frequency. Recordings now available offer opportunities to hear and study Buddhism from global musical perspectives, although the musics of some Buddhist groups and cultures are considerably better represented than those of others. The sonic record evidences a remarkably rich and diverse world of Buddhist music-making, with some widely shared expressive values, and also many striking differences. It is our hope that this discographic survey, together with a survey of scholarly literature published previously (Buddhism and the Musical Cultures of Asia: A Critical Literature Survey, Greene, Howard, Miller, Nguyen and Tan 2002), may be of use to researchers in ethnomusicology, Buddhist studies, the anthropology of religion and other fields, who wish to examine Buddhist musics and musical cultures more deeply, both within specific culture areas and also comparatively, across cultures.
