One of Lowell's letters from a Rome visit in 1851-1852 is published here; it is found in Volume I, pp. 192-194. In an 1856 letter to his sister from the same volume, pp. 258-260, Lowell abbreviatedly relates visits to Venice, Verona, Mantua, Parma, Bologna, Reggio, Modena, Ravenna, Florence, Orvieto, Rome, Subiaco, and Naples. The postscript reads: "We are just starting to climb Vesuvius." In Volume II, pp. 108-123, letters from 1873-1874 describe visits to Venice, Rome, and Naples. A fall vacation tour to Venice, Florence, and Rome of 1881 is described in Volume II, pp. 261-265. In some cases, letters leading up to the actual journeys relate Lowell's impressions and expectations of Italy.
