EnglishContradicting the superficial and unjustified conventional interpretation of the lily in the images of the Annunciation, we propose in this paper two new deep theological interpretations of that flower at this biblical episode. Based on the analysis of an abundant amount of citations of the Church Fathers and medieval theologians, which demonstrate a well established doctrinal tradition about this issue, we try to show that the bouquet of lilies at the scene of the Annunciation symbolize both the virginal divine motherhood of Mary as the supernatural human incarnation of God the Son, Christ. Our study also seeks to relate these textual analyses of patristic and theological sources with twelve Spanish Gothic Annunciations that include a bouquet of lilies.
