The motivations of 395 public librarians to participate in continuing education events were compared with those of 222 respondents from other types of libraries. Public librarians gave three of the four motivators significantly higher mean ratings than did respondents who worked in other types of libraries. However, most of the significant afferences between the respondents appear to be due primarily to the responses of the paraprofessional public librarians, who rated three motivators significantly higher than did the paraprofessional respondents from other types of libraries and who rated all four motivators significantly higher than did the public library respondents who had their master's degree.
