ESP and Corpus Studies

Abstract

One of the applications of corpus studies to English for specific purposes (ESP) has been the production of wordlists for materials and test design. A corpus needs to be large to represent a given language variety of text and many types of corpus analysis can be conducted if the corpus is annotated in some way, for example with part of speech tags and contextual information. ESP corpora are made up of research articles because there is a long ESP tradition of research article analysis. Some small private ESP corpora become well-known despite their restricted access. Learner corpora entails involving the students themselves in the process of corpus creation. ESP practitioners can turn to ready-made corpora that are in the public domain. Although most studies of specialist corpora end with a summary of the pedagogical implications of their findings, researchers still need to communicate more with teachers and materials developers.
