The British Archaeological Expedition to Kuwait (B AEK) began work in 1998 in the coastal As-Sabiyah (al-Sabiyah) region, on the north side of Kuwait Bay; a short season of preliminary investigation and survey (Carter et al. 1999) has now been followed by two full seasons of excavation at a well-preserved Ubaid-related site (Carter & Crawford, in press; Carter & Crawford, forthcoming). The site is known as H3, As-Sabiyah. It is the most northerly coastal Ubaid-related site yet discovered. It is one of many sites now known from the Arabian Gulf which display elements of Ubaid material culture, mainly in the form of pottery (Fig. 1 ). Such sites are concentrated in the Central Gulf region, but are also found as far east as Ra's al-Khaimah.1
