The formation of commissions for monastic inter-religious dialogue (MID) is one of the most important developments in the area of inter-religious dialogue. It provides a concrete expression to a constitutive element of all true dialogue, namely, encounter at the level of spiritual experience. This chapter begins by first describing the history of the formation of the MID commissions, a history that shows how thinking about dialogue has evolved over past decades. Second, this evolution would not have been possible without the commitment of the pioneers of dialogue. Third, the history of DIM from 1978 to 2011 demonstrates the growing acceptance of dialogue that was possible and necessary over the course of these years. It concludes by looking at the challenges and promise of this form of dialogue. The chapter also emphasizes Thomas Merton's view of inter-religious dialogue - “And the deepest level of communication is not communication, but communion.”
