Abstract This article discusses the contribution that anthropology, and especially the notion of culture, can make to the study of entrepreneurship.1 In it, I will draw on ethnographic material I collected about a rural-urban entrepreneur dealing in strawberries, and try to show how anthropology can illuminate fundamental issues in entrepreneurship, and some of the processes involved in starting and running a business. Because of the nature of my data I am concerned with small-scale businesses, primarily in the developing world, but I believe that the phenomena I observed have their counterparts in modern economies, and that my discussion therefore has a general relevance.
