Preliminary findings from the PLACE projectWithin the research project PLACE: Public Libraries-Arenas for Citizenship: An lnvestigation of the Public Library as a Community Meeting Place Fostering Sacia!Capita! in a Digital and Multicultural Context, it has been necessary to develop concepts on public libraries, social meetings and social capita/, as part of developing an empirical research strategy.The concept oflow-intensive meeting-places, and adapting concepts ofsocial trust and social capita! to the con text of the public library, are crucial for research on the role of the public li bra ry in the multimedia! and multicultural society.Little research has earlier been conducted on public libraries and the creation ofsocial capita/.However, more research has been done on public libraries and social meeting-places.On the macro-level our research point to the public li bra ry as having an effect on the leve!ofsocial capita!comparable to impartial and e./ficient public institutions in general.By conducting case studies and surveys, we will try to Jlesh out the causa!mechanisms at work.
