Abstract By the time children reach adulthood, they will have spent more time using electronic screen media than learning in formal school settings. Thus screen media have enormous potential to influence cognitive development—for good or ill. This chapter describes popular concerns about media impact, usingSesame Streetas a case study. Current estimates of children's use of media and engagement in multitasking behavior are presented. Empirical research is summarized with respect to children's cognition during use of media and implications for media effects on children are noted. Possible direct and indirect pathways of media influence on cognitive development are outlined, followed by a summary of research on media effects on cognitive skills and academic achievement. The chapter concludes with a critical analysis of research to date, including areas in need of future study.
