This chapter explores the phenomenon of contemporary Celtic spirituality, to examine why people are turning to the Celts and the Celtic past for spiritual inspiration, and to demonstrate how varied and complex this phenomenon is. The Celtic mists are swirling again and the people are once more in the throes of a Celtic revival. One of the most influential sources for details about the Celts has traditionally been Greek and Roman accounts of them, and many scholarly summaries and reappraisals of these classical sources have appeared in recent years. One of the most tangible sources of information about the Celts is that of Celtic language and literature. To put the contemporary interest in Celtic Christianity into context, it is useful to note Ian Bradley’s claim that what the people are experiencing now is the sixth and latest form of ‘Celtic Christian revivalism’. Contemporary Celtic spirituality floats on a raft of ideas of comparatively recent construction.
