Spatial hypermedia is particularly apt for serving visually impaired users as its ability to recognize spatial arrangements and relationships enables it to interpret and convey the information implicit in the document layout. This structural information is critical for understanding the document organization and greatly facilitates the navigation of Web pages. AudibleSpace investigates how to create Accessible Spatial Hypermedia Systems that better support visually impaired users. The project’s goals are to: 1) show that visually impaired users can use spatial hypermedia; 2) show that spatial hypermedia enhances assistive technology, conveying more information about the document organization and providing a navigation experience similar to that of sighted users.
