Abstract The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) is a 21‐item self‐report assessment of the intensity of depression for use in both psychiatric and nonpsychiatric clinical populations. First created by the psychiatrist Aaron T. Beck in 1961, theBDIis now in its third iteration (BDI‐II) and remains one of the most widely used tests of the severity of depression. TheBDI‐IIhas been tested extensively for convergent and discriminant (construct) validities, concurrent validity, and factorial validity, and it has been translated into over 20 languages. Short forms of theBDIhave been constructed for use in screening for major depressive disorders in nonpsychiatric clinical populations and for use with children and adolescents. TheBDIis not a tool fordiagnosingdepression but rather is an assessment of theintensityorseverityof depressive symptoms.
