Preventing Theft of Compact Discs at the Wyoming Branch Library

Abstract

Compact discs (CDs), containing music or computer programs present inviting targets for theft because of their size and popularity. The placement of magnetic or radio frequency theft detection targets on audiovisual materials has always been problematic, because the theft detection systems themselves may interfere with the performance of the media. While compact discs and similar optical media are not liable to accidental erasure caused by desensitizing, they are vulnerable to dust, ink, and scratches. Placing theft detection targets in CD cases is ineffective, since thieves can simply remove the media. However, since demand for musical genres and for recent and older music varies, it may not be necessary to protect entire collections. This paper outlines a practical low technology method of identifying and protecting high risk music CDs, and explains how it is used at a Michigan public library.
