Abstract

A study of the development of the world's first mercantile dock system, in liverpool, england, from the early 18th century to the present day. The volume describes each of the south docks, their construction and history. A section is devoted to technical and mechanical aspects, from piling technology and dock wall construction, to water regime and hydraulic machinery. Sheds, warehouses and the subject of dock architecture in general, are examined in detail.
