One of the handicrafts that are actively made today in Turkey is the making of knife. Since old times, Surmene knives have been famous for their quality. House type production has been continuing for long years as a tradition. In 15 small scale enterprise in Surmene, different types of knives based on manual labor, their hafts and cases are produced by the same craftsman in the same workplace. On the other hand, fabrication production is made in two big establishments in Surmene. Yearly production capacity reaches 500.000 and almost 100 families live off through this production. Surmene knives also contribute to the promotion of the city. Continuing both traditional and fabrication production is a typical feature. In the research, the goal is to determine the development of the activity of handicraft, its contribution to the economy of neighborhood and problems in its production.
