These are the words Shelby Leverington, the female subject of No Lies1 yells in a half-choked voice at Alec Hirschfeld, the male filmmaker, at the climax of this important and very disturbing short film by Mitchell Block. Philosophically in agreement with Shelby's outburst that rape can't be explained to someone who has never experienced it, the film avoids explanations; rather, No Lies opts for action. It is not merely about rape. Cinematically, it also demonstrates and commits rape?and it does so in such a way as to make the experience of being the unwary, unprepared victim of an aggressive assault on one's person, on one's pride, and on one's expectations of and security in familiar activity in familiar surroundings a very real experience accessi ble to anyone of either sex who views the film.
