This chapter discusses critical perspectives on research into English for academic purposes (EAP), the well known sub-field of English for specific purposes (ESP) in which critical work is being done. It considers critical approaches to needs analysis, critical perspectives on learning and teaching genre, and on plagiarism. The critical turn in EAP has led to an interrogation of the intentions and outcomes of explicit genre teaching, initially promoted as a pedagogy of access. The chapter concludes with a discussion on power and politics in academic publishing in English and a consideration of future directions for research. Longitudinal studies urgently needed across a number of the areas as there is need to understand better how enculturation, to the extent that it occurs, changes and develops over time and in different contexts.
