The collapse of the kingdom of Lysimachus and the Great Celtic invasion set the beginning of a long period in which ancient Thrace was impoverished and fragmented, and which has left a very inadequate trace in the historical tradition. The residual kingdom of the Odrysae was just one among a number of political entities in the Thracian interior including: the Celtic kingdom of Tyle; the tribal kingdoms of the Astae, Caeni, Sapaeans, Maedi, Dentheletae, Bessi, and others; and independent cities like Cabyle. The impact of the great events in the Eastern Mediterranean – the rivalries between the main Hellenistic dynasties, the Macedonian and Mithridatic wars, and the imposition of the eastern Roman provinces – was especially strong in the coastal areas of Aegean Thrace, but influenced the historical development of the whole country.
